The higher a woman's weight, the higher the risk of pre-term birth

Posted:

(KWWL) -- A new study finds overweight and obese women have a greater risk for pre-term births, and the chances are higher the heavier the woman is.

Researchers at McMaster University found overweight women are 30 percent more likely to have an induced, pre-term birth before 37 weeks, with that risk climbing to 70 percent for very obese women.

These women also had a higher risk for early pre-term birth, meaning before 32 or 33 weeks.

Pre-term babies are more likely to have serious health problems during infancy and throughout childhood.
