Iowa Dept. for blind in Des Moines gets special honors

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL)-- The Iowa Department for the Blind was honored July 1st with its building being placed on the National Registar of Historic Places.

The building was built in 1912 and located in downtown Des Moines as the city's original YMCA.

After the state purchased the building in 1912 it underwent a major remodeling in 2009 to create more efficient work space for the department. The historic features such as ironwork in the stairway, marble stairs and tall, arching windows remained intact.

The swimming pool in its basement from the YMCA is still used by clients and staff.
