Waterloo Council sees petitions on liquor store license

WATERLOO (KWWL)--- Two petitions were handed into the Waterloo City Council Monday night, both concerning the liquor license for Five Star Snacks and Liquor.  The Church Row Neighborhood Association has collected more than 200 signatures of people opposed to the store having its license renewed.  That group alleges that the liquor store is the source of extensive criminal activity, adding to the level of crime that's already happening in the area.

"We're seeing all kinds of milling around, transferring of things from one person to another that we believe are illegal.  It's an undesirable element that's in the store.  It's not a place where family people go.  It's not a place where clean cut men go.  It's pretty shoddy, "said Mary Potter with the Church Row Neighborhood Association.

The liquor store denies those allegations.  Two employees of Five Star also presented a petition containing some 600 signatures of people who support the store keeping its liquor license.  The city council accepted both petitions for consideration.  It's set to vote on the store's license renewal next week.
