WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL)

The United States Department of Health and Human Services is awarding the University of Iowa $ 270,000 for a key research project on the Iowa campus.

Senator Chuck Grassley announced Monday the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a $200,700 competitive grant to the University of Iowa through the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The University of Iowa will use the money to fund an allergy, immunology and transplantation research project titled, "Research Training in Infectious Diseases."

Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual's ability to meet criteria set by the Federal entity.
