Poverty is a risk for HIV

(KWWL) -- A new study draws a strong link between living in poverty and the risk for HIV infection.

A new analysis from the Centers for Disease Control finds 2.1 percent of heterosexuals living in extremely poor, urban areas are infected with HIV, the virus that causes aids.

Researchers say that's enough to designate those poorest areas as in the midst of an HIV epidemic.

Even though strong racial disparities are seen among HIV-infected people in the general population, there were no such differences in these poor communities.
