Honor and Remember Flag honors ultimate sacrifice

WAVERLY (KWWL) George Lutz of Virginia is traveling around the country in a decorated RV. He began June 7th and plans to visit all 50 states. Iowa is his 23rd stop.

Lutz is on a mission to honor and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. He wants to make a special flag a national symbol.

"The establishment of a flag that recognizes all those who died in military service to our country," said George Lutz.

Lutz lost his son, Tony, in Iraq in December 2005. Tony was 25 and left behind a wife and two children.

"Out of that I was looking for anything I could embrace as a father. Something that showed they remembered, they appreciated freedom had a price," said Lutz.

Lutz and another son created the Honor and Remember Flag. He said the symbol is a way to say thank you to all the families who've lost loved ones fighting for our country.

"There's never been a symbol. Of all the symbols and emblems we have in this country to identify everything from colleges and high schools to states, there's never been a publicly recognized symbol that acknowledged the sacrifice of our fallen," said Lutz.

He said there's a bill in Congress now to establish Honor and Remember as an official flag of remembrance. As he drives across the country, he's gathering legislators' signatures in favor of adopting the flag.

Lutz said for him, this journey is part of the healing process.

"We walk under freedom everyday and it's important to know those freedom deserve some kind of recognition and regardless of what we do for these families and how we remember I don't think we could ever do enough. But to have a tangible symbol I think speaks words louder than thunder," he said.

Lutz plans to finish his tour of the country at Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day, November 11th.

George Lutz plans to be in Des Moines Monday, and he hopes to meet with Governor Culver.
