Latest I-Jobs project brings expanded prison

DES MOINES (KWWL)---Ground was broken Thursday for a major expansion at the Iowa Corrections Institution for Women at Mitchellville. The $47.5 million project is funded by I-JOBS, the Iowa infrastructure investment initiative.

"When this project is finished, Mitchellville will continue to be a useful correctional facility for many years to come. Even more important, it will create 195 new, full-time, permanent jobs," Governor Culver said.

As the facility is built, the project will create over 300 good-paying construction jobs.

When the Mitchellville expansion is completed in 2013, it will add 300 beds; improve the intake, infirmary, assisted living, hospice and visiting areas; and introduce a progressive design for the treatment and rehabilitation of offenders with a strong emphasis on medical and mental health.

As of December 2009, total infrastructure development spending achieved through I-JOBS was $1.16 billion, representing $550.6 million in I-JOBS funding combined with $610.6 million in leveraged project funding
