Waterborne diseases can lurk in hot tub mist, air conditioners

(KWWL) -- You don't hear too much about them, but a new study finds waterborne diseases sicken thousands of people and cost the health care system over $500 million dollars a year.

This is an estimate from the Centers for Disease Control, which states these illnesses, like Legionnaire's Disease, are responsible for long hospitalizations to treat rashes, infections or even neurological symptoms.

Legionnaire's Disease is a type of pneumonia, and can be contracted by breathing in bacteria-filled mist.  The mist may come from hot tubs, showers, or air conditioning units for large buildings.  It does not spread from person to person.
