CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)--- The Cedar Rapids Transit Division will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act with a demonstration of their new Gillig buses prior to the Kernels Game on Saturday, July 17, 2010. A new bus will be at the Veterans Memorial Stadium from 3:30 to 5:30pm for boarding, de-boarding and fare box demonstrations. The Cedar Rapids Transit Division has incorporated 8 new Gillig buses into its fleet in the last two years. The new buses feature an easy to use wheelchair accessible ramp and offer passengers a smooth ride to their destination. While all Cedar Rapids Transit buses provide wheelchair access, the new buses have a lower floor, which allows passengers to easily move from the curb to their seat, without a significant level change.
Cedar Rapids Transit is constantly striving to improve the accessibility of its services. The purchase of 5 more Gillig buses is planned for next year. In addition to the new buses, the Transit Division continues to improve bus stop locations with concrete pads. A concrete pad provides an even, stable surface for people using a wheelchair or walker. Also, the Intermodal Transit Facility, which will replace the former Ground Transportation Center damaged by the flood, will be designed and built to meet all ADA standards and improve the Transit Division's ability to serve people with disabilities
