Police arrest man for breaking into former Waterloo school

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A 21-year-old man is charged with breaking into a former elementary school, and setting a storage box on fire.

According to our coverage partners at the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier, Sharvis Andrew Welsh was arrested Sunday near the former Irving School.  Police said they found him, a 10-year-old boy and two of the boys friends while responding to a prowler report.

Officers pulled up to the school around 4:45, and saw Welsh standing with a young person and four bicycles.  They report Welsh tossed a stick, and a short time later a boy ran out of the school.  Police found another boy inside the school, and uncovered a lighter in Welsh's pocket.

Police discovered a broken window which they believe the kids used to enter the building.  They also noticed a fire in an unlocked storage box behind the school.

Welsh is charged with contributing to delinquency, reckless use of fire, and fourth degree criminal mischief.  According to the Courier, Welsh is engaged to the mother of one of the kids.  That boy was in his custody at the time of the offense.
