Update: Name released in fatal construction accident

IOWA CITY (KWWL)-- Authorities have released the name of the victim in Monday's fatal construction accident in Iowa City.

Gamaliel Rodriguez, 31, of West Liberty was killed Monday when a co-worker hit him with a dump truck inside a construction zone on Interstate 80.

Iowa Workforce Development is reporting 46 work-related deaths in 2009, and construction accidents were the number one cause of work-related fatalities.

Iowa has adopted federal OSHA standards and regulations in keeping workers safe on the job.

Guidelines require workers to wear protective gear like helmets, and be barricaded away from outside interference.

It's still unclear exactly what happened in Monday's fatal accident, but officials advise that everyone shares responsibility in working together to stay safe in a construction zone.

"It's a constant concern for your surroundings, whether it's a truck that backs up over a colleague.  The dump truck driver has to be consciences but the workers have to realize the trucks have blind spots and they can't see everyone," said Kerry Koonce, spokeswoman for Iowa Workforce Development.
