2009 Iowa Infectious Disease report

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Infectious diseases were on the rise in Iowa in 2009.  That's the overall picture from an annual report by the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The report documented a total 53,000 cases of infectious diseases last year in the state.

The most widespread was flu.  H1N1 brought Iowa's first influenza pandemic since the early 1950's.

Foodborne illnesses were generally lower than in previous years.  Chlamydial infections continued a 30-year trend, increasing slightly yet again.

The number of newly diagnosed HIV cases went up 19% from 2008 numbers.  Only a handful of West Nile cases were detected last year, but patients with lyme disease topped 100 for the third consecutive year.
