Wisconsin Native American community subject of drug bust

BAYFIELD, WISC. (KWWL)--– A combined law enforcement team served three search warrants on and about the Red Cliff Native American community in Bayfield County, Wisc. Tuesday.

Tyrone W. Butterfield Sr. was arrested and was charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana as a repeat drug offender and keeper of a drug dwelling. Elmer "Donny" Saari was also arrested and charged with manufacturing and possession with intent to deliver marijuana and keeper of a drug dwelling.

Officers seized two handguns, 11 long guns (4 were military style semiautomatic rifles), more than 19 pounds of processed marijuana and 31 marijuana plants, and $6,178 in cash.

The investigation was brought to a successful conclusion because of the cooperative effort between the police agencies involved in this case. Those agencies were the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation, Bayfield County Sheriff's Office, Northern Area Crime Unit, Wisconsin State Patrol, NADGI Task Force, and US Border Patrol agents. This investigation is an excellent example of the successful partnership that has been established through the Native American Drug & Gang Initiative.

"NADGI is a very important partnership between the Wisconsin Department of Justice and Wisconsin's Tribal Nations to fight crime on reservations.  I congratulate all of the participating agencies for the success of this operation," said Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.
