WATERLOO (KWWL) Between three and six inches of water covered one basement floor in Waterloo. The water has gone down, but you can see the carpet and other areas of the basement are still wet.

Kelly Jones with Servicemaster 380 said he's definitely staying busy.

"Oh yes. We knew Tuesday morning when it started raining we were in for some a significant amount of losses," said Kelly Jones.

Jones said the longer the area remains wet, the more damage it can cause to the house. Leaving water is also a health risk for those living in the house.

"I know people have told me they're already having headaches. The only way around it is just to get your house cleaned," said Jones.

Cleaning is what Servicemaster 380 and Platinum Construction do.

The first step is removing all the content. Everything must be moved somewhere else. Anything touched by flood water is set aside and sanitized. Some things can't be cleaned and are thrown away. If you have insurance, an inventory is taken for you to turn in.

Once the area is clear, it's time for the structure. Anything that absorbed water such as carpet and paneled walls must go. Next, is a three step sanitization process.

Kelly Jones said the jobs can take anywhere from four to six hours.

Servicemaster gets to as many jobs as possible, but Jones said there are certain things you can do while you wait.

"Getting their content up and out that lets us come in and address the house itself. Even if they want to offset some cost they can remove their own carpet and pad. All that saves us time and in the end saves them money," he said.

Jones said if you have any water in your basement or house, do something. Don't let it sit and stay wet or you're worse off in the future.
