Waterloo neighborhood evacuated because of gas leak

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A gas leak forced the evacuation of a Waterloo neighborhood Thursday.

It happened around 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning in the 1500 block of Jefferson Street.  Residents say sewer work was being done at the time.  That's when they say a backhoe hit the active gas line.  Two people were taken away by ambulance.

"Mid American Energy came out Tuesday to mark the lines and they didn't mark the gas line that was in the alley. It was supposed to he a dead end pipe and they can't figure how to turn it off, they evacuated the whole neighborhood," Bonnie Gage said.

The area was evacuated for hours as utility crews worked to repair the leak.
