Clean up after flash flooding in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- In the matter of one hour of opening Thursday morning, the Red Cross gave out about 50 clean up kits.

Bonetta Culp picked up a kit never thinking she would ever need one.

Culp has lived in her Waterloo home for more than 33 years. She has never seen flooding in her basement until Wednesday.

"In 2008 I had to go see the water this time the water came to me," said Culp.

In fact she says she was very confident there was no water in her basement and the only reason she went down stairs was to wash some clothes.

"Then I went down stairs and I saw water coming in from every corner of my home. Every corner had puddles that have came into my home and I have never had that before."

Culp is just one of many people in Waterloo who picked up a cleaning kit from the Red Cross to start the clean up process.

She has one piece of advice to people who have never thought their home would flood.

"Go and check their basements if they have never had water damage before they think they are immune to it and so they have not gone and checked, go down and check. You may be surprised."

Culp says she is running her dehumidifier on high and has to dump the water out every two hours.
