Back to school project seeks applicants, volunteers

WATERLOO (KWWL)--- Most remember the thrill of opening a new box of crayons or bright white notebook on the first day of school.  Sadly, many students cannot afford these necessary supplies and the "Back to School Project" needs the public's help to fill these children's schoolbags. The goal of the project is to provide new school supplies to Black Hawk County students who otherwise may not be able to afford them.  The organization's principal activity is to raise monetary donations and donations of new school supplies that will then be distributed to students who have registered to receive them. In 2009, supplies were given to over 2,300 students and that number is expected to grow in 2010.

Students must be registered at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank during the month of July. Advance registration is necessary so each student receives the supplies requested by their school for their grade. Qualified students must be in Kindergarten through Middle School and in Black Hawk County.

As a not-for-profit organization, the Back to School Project is always looking for new contributors or collection sites.  Some businesses donate their casual Friday money and others have collection sites where employees can bring donated supplies.  Some businesses, organizations or churches have either collection boxes or banks where people can donate supplies or cash. Some supporters have held birthday parties where guests are asked to bring school supplies for the Back to School Project instead of gifts.  There are countless ways to support the organization and to support the organization's belief that all students deserve to have new supplies when they walk into school on the first day.

Monetary donations should be mailed to Back to School Project, P.O. Box 2334, Waterloo, IA  50704. New school supplies may be dropped off at many collection sites, including the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.  For information on additional collection sites or to establish one at your business, please contact Ruth Orth at 319-240-7470

-In addition to making supply and monetary donations, the public is invited to volunteer.   Volunteers are needed in August to collect, sort, inventory, sack and distribute the school supplies on the following dates...

-Distribution for students attending either Carver Academy or Lincoln Elementary will be Saturday, August 7th in advance of those schools' August 9th start date.

-Assembling supplies for other Black Hawk County Schools will begin on Tuesday, August 10th

-Volunteers are needed to help with the remaining two distribution dates:   Thursday, August 12th from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and Friday, August 13th from 10 AM until 2 PM.

Irving Elementary will be the site for each distribution date.  Interested volunteers should contact Ruth Orth.

Founded in 1994, the Back to School project has provided necessary school supplies to tens of thousands of Black Hawk County children in grades K-8.   Supplies are distributed in accordance with the lists determined by the schools.
