Police chaplain dies in crash


DES MOINES (KWWL) -- A man who served as the Des Moines police chaplain and comforted grieving and trouble officers has died of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Police say Irvin Lewis was injured June 28th in Des Moines when a road sign blew in front of his motorcycle and hit him. A police report says the sign was not anchored by a sandbag.

Lewis died Monday. He was 62.

Lewis served as chaplain for three years. He was appointed by Chief Judy Bradshaw when she was named to the top job in 2007.
