Iowa native Zach Johnson enjoys special homecoming

Silvis, Ill(KWWL) Zach Johnson has played  in the Quad Cities for just under a decade, and being just over an hour from Cedar Rapids, it's the closest thing he's got to a hometown tournament, which means familiar faces and bigger galleries. He said back in the day, that used to make him nervous, but not anymore.

Zach Johnson: "I kind of feel like I play in front of a home crowd nearly every week. That may sound weird, and it may be far fetched, but there is Iowa people everywhere"

And while that might be true, the galleries for Zach are always bigger in the Quad Cities, and that didn't always bode well as the Cedar Rapids native finished no better than 20th in his first 7 tries. Last year he finally broke through finishing 2nd-- making him believe that he could put together at Deere Run

Johnson said "What I can take from it is just the fact that I really wasn't in strong contention going into the weekend, but that really doesn't matter as long as I play my own game and execute accordingly, I can certainly move up the board."

for Zach and much of the field, the John Deere Classic is really a good warm up for next week's British Open, and despite the fact that it's over 3-thousand, 7-hundred miles away from the Hawkeye state, Zach still expects to have a great following of Iowans.

Johnson said, "Next week, I'm going across the pond, I guarantee it. I'll bet the farm. I don't have one, but I'll bet it."

Johnson will be teeing off at 12:28 on Thursday with Tim Clark and Bubba Watson as he goes for his first win here at the TPC at Deere Run. In the Quad Cities, I'm Mark Woodley for Iowa's Newschannel 7.
