Company to build new Waterloo Elementary announced Tuesday

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- The company that will build a new elementary school in Waterloo is set to be announced today.

The school will replace Black Hawk Elementary which closed last month.

A special session for the school board will be held this afternoon to award the contract.

The board has been taking bids on the 79,000 square foot project since Thursday.

Black Hawk Elementary closed just last month after being open for 60 years.

The building can't be torn down yet as the removal of asbestos has not been finished so construction of the new school will begin before Black Hawk is torn down.

The total cost of the project is expected to be around 15 and a half million dollars.

Additionally, nine homes along Sager Street will need to be torn down to make room for the school but the district has not yet purchased those homes.

The new West Elementary School will open fall of next year.

For this upcoming school year, most Black Hawk students will be attending Edison Elementary.
