Bike art in downtown Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- From an Irish theme to flamingos, businesses in downtown Waterloo are getting into the RAGBRAI® spirit.

"Oh they are flabbergasted, they think it's wild and far out," Doris Boogren from Abbott Law Office said.

In an effort to promote biking downtown and RAGBRAI, Main Street Waterloo challenged area businesses to decorate a bike.

People who come to visit Waterloo can vote on their favorite decorated bike for a chance to win two $50 gift cards to Scheels.

"We have had a lot of great interest across the country.  At the Waterloo CVB they had a family from Montana that came by and went and saw the bike and got all excited.  They took their picture next to it and sent it back. It's really getting around, people are really paying attention," Mitch Biersner, Main Street Waterloo Marketing and Event Coordinator, said.

"They have been very excited about it. Nobody has gone crazy about it, but they think it's really funny," Boogren said.

Fifteen downtown businesses are getting involved hoping their bike is the best decorated.

"You'll be surprised at seeing how creative all the businesses were in decorating their bikes," Biersner said.

The business voted as having the best decorated bike will win a table at Irish Fest, which will be held later this summer in Waterloo.

Voting will end on July 30, and the winner will be announced at the Waterloo Farmer's Market July 31.
