Grant Wood Window is restored

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- After nearly $150,000 dollars in materials and labor, an Iowan Veterans Memorial has been restored.

The Grant Wood Window in the Cedar Rapids Veteran's Memorial Building had a dedication ceremony today.

Two summers ago, flood waters came up to the bottom of the window, but moisture and temperature changes still did damage to the piece of art.

"The window just got so hot it expanded and contracted and caused a lot of stress cracks in the glass along with the steam leaving a coating of dirt on the window itself," Glass Heritage LLC Partner John Watts said.

Glass Heritage LLC is a Davenport company that has spent the last 6 months disassembling the 58 panels of stained glass.

The piece was designed by Grant Wood, the artist famous for painting "American Gothic."

The tribute to veterans includes a large picture of a woman known as the "Angel of Peace" welcoming soldiers home.

Below her are six veterans dressed as soldiers from the wars between the Revolutionary War and World War I.
