Waterloo woman pleads guilty to defrauding Medicaid

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Waterloo woman admits that she defrauded Medicaid out of more than $43,000 to make her car payments.

Jo Ann Scott, 48, of Waterloo, pleaded guilty Friday in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Scott was convicted of one count of health care fraud and one count of mail fraud and in a plea agreement, admitted that between about October 2004 and January 2009, she submitted false claims to Medicaid for services she didn't receive.

She also admitted that she submitted the claims using the name and provider number of another person.

In many cases, Scott negotiated the Medicaid checks at a Waterloo car dealer and used a portion of the money to make her car payment, and got the rest in cash.

A sentencing date has not been set and Scott remains free on bond until she is sentenced.

She faces a possible maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, a $500,000 fine, $200 in special assessments, and 3 years of supervised release.
