Tanner Cooke: Athlete of the Week

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)Just 7 days after Tanner Cooke threw his first perfect game in a 14-0 victory over Dike-New Hartford--- he faced some adversity in his very next start.. Cooke gave up a 2-run homer in the first inning to Hudson's outstanding pitcher Cale Henke...

Cooke showed his true grit by digging deep--and battling back.

Cooke said "My dad always told me to look past that and keep pitching --I got mad but after that I said I don't want to let them score any more runs and it worked out."

It worked out very well for NU High as Tanner Cooke held the Pirates scoreless over the next seven innings--giving up just 4 hits and striking out 8 as the Little Panthers rallied for a 3-2 victory. Cooke says his mental toughness has been sharpened by his success in another sport.

Tanner Cooke was one of the top players on an NU High Basketball team that won state 2 years ago-- finished second in 2009 and third in the state this past spring.

"Tough games at state that we had got me prepared--you've got to battle through everything that happens no matter what."

So far this season-- Cooke leads the Little Panthers with a 5-1 record--84 strikeouts and a scant 1 point 7 earned run average.

NU High head baseball coach Brent Denning says Tanner has always been a solid, smart, baseball player--but he has worked hard to put more muscle on his 6-5 frame.

Denning said, "He's a leader ...really going to miss that".
