Cubs, Mesa to hold meetings on spring training

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Attorneys for the Chicago Cubs and the City of Mesa are holding meetings in an effort to reach a formal agreement to keep the team in Arizona.

Mayor Scott Smith said both sides will attempt to hammer out details before a July 12 deadline.

Mesa won't meet a key technical requirement regarding financing by the July deadline, but Smith said work is forging ahead with an alternative approach.

The Legislature failed during its last session to come up with a funding formula to build a new stadium for the Cubs.

The city has since decided to sell off land in Pinal County to fund the $84 million project.

Mesa officials plan to push the Legislature next year to fund spring training complexes across metro Phoenix. But if that fails, the city will use land sale proceeds to build a stadium.
