UNI Gets DOT Grant

Iowa Democratic Senator Tom Harkin's office Monday announced the University of Northern Iowa has been awarded a total of $1,263,845 from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for the final purchase of solar panels for the University's multimodal facility in Cedar Falls.

"These funds represent an important step in energy efficiency, not only as a form of alternative transportation, but in their efforts to use alternative energy sources," Harkin said. "I congratulate Cedar Falls for their efforts to improve alternative transportation options while also taking steps toward a smaller carbon footprint."

As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Harkin helped secure these funds in the 2005 Surface Transportation Reauthorization Bill and the 2008 comprehensive spending package, which helped to construct its original transit center and a "park-n-ride" facility in 2008.
