Hype builds for 2010 Iowa football season

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The 2010 Iowa football campaign is more than 2 months away, but the hype machine is already in full swing.  Expectations are once again on the rise after the Hawkeye's Orange Bowl defeat of Georgia Tech.

The hype is evident in the Richard O. Jacobson football complex as Iowa held a mid-summer mini-media day for the first time ever.  However, the Hawkeye players say that if they buy into it, it's going to be a long season.

"Every other team is trying to win the Big Ten championship or trying to win every game the same way that we are," says quarterback Ricky Stanzi, "so for us to think that it's going to be easy because a magazine has us ranked somewhere it's going to help us, shame on us, because that's not the right way to think.  That's only going to get us beat."

Offensive lineman Julian Vandervelde agrees.  "As far as we're concerned, what the outside world has to say really doesn't matter all that much.  Obviously we like to keep our fans in the loop.  We want to make sure that we have a positive image, but as far as our football preparation goes and the preseason standings, none of that really matters for us."

The Hawkeyes 2010 campaign opens up September 4, at home against Eastern Illinois.
