PETA offers pointers to protect pets during flood

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- As residents in the Des Moines area brace for flooding, PETA is handing out advice for the safety of pets in event of an evacuation.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says the one thing owners should not do is leave animals behind to fend for themselves if there is an evacuation.

The organization also advises against tying animals up or leaving them confined in any way. To do so may cause the animal to be trapped in rising water.

If you flee rising water with your animal, know where you are going ahead of time so you won't be surprised by the barring of your pet from the facility.

PETA also recommends placing small animals in secure carriers, keeping dogs leashed, and taking along water and food to last at least a week.
