Dubuque river center opening brings national attention

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium is now the most comprehensive river museum in the U.S.

The opening of the Diamond Jo River Center Saturday made that the case.

That wasn't the only plan for expansion, however. The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium also plans on opening the Mississippi River Plaza in 2011.

The Diamond Jo River Center includes an exhibit called "Imagine a Lifeless Gulf," which shows the potential effects of oil in the Gulf of Mexico. The exhibit has caught the attention of more than 300 media outlets nationwide, according to National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium executive director Jerry Enzler.

Enzler also said the Diamond Jo River Center includes fossils and other items from the Smithsonian Institute.
