RAGBRAI looking for Waterloo volunteers

®WATERLOO (KWWL)--- We're just a month away from the time when RAGBRAI® cyclists will make their way into Waterloo.  And event organizers say your help is needed in accommodating these two-wheeling out-of-towners.

Thousands of bicyclists push their pedals across Iowa every year during RAGBRAI.  And as the ride makes its way through Waterloo, many road-weary riders need a place to stay.

"We have about a hundred request for housing for riders that are coming into town," said Tim Hurley, RAGBRAI executive committee member.

Housing RAGBRAI riders is simple.

"People who are interested and would like to host riders overnight on the 29th, they don't need to cook or do anything.  All these riders need is a dry place to pitch a tent and maybe park a vehicle," Hurley said.

Some riders may request access to a bathroom, too.  But that's it!  And organizers of this cycling event say it's important for the community to welcome these two-wheeling guests, because of what they do for the area.

"We know that it will be an economic impact of two to three million dollars for just one night.  So we need to put out best foot forward and welcome these people," said Hurley.

If you're interested in helping house riders, you can event request to read their profiles to learn everything from their ages, to where they're from, and how long they've been biking.  And all the riders are sure to appreciate your expression of Midwestern hospitality.
