Waterloo man gets 30-year sentence for shooting at cop

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A Waterloo man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for allegedly shooting at a police officer following a traffic accident in July of 2009.

A jury found Darnell Demery guilty last month of attempted murder, felon in possession of a firearm, assault on a peace officer and related charges.

The judge said the 22-year-old Demery was a threat to the community with an extremely violent history.

He also said Demery's behavior was inexcusable.

Police say they approached Demery after a hit-and-run accident.

He handed over his license but then ran off before he could get a ticket.

Prosecutors say that when Officer Spencer Gann chased him, Demery turned and fired his gun.

Demery will have to serve 70 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
