Today's Sweet Tooth: Scratch Bakery and Cafe

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) Customers are lining up at a new bakery in downtown Cedar Falls. Scratch Bakery and Cafe opened June 18th.

It had to close early on opening day because the food ran out!

Owner Natalie Brown said Scratch is mostly a dessert bakery. One of her specialties is chocolate chip walnut cookies. She makes hundreds of them.

"They're huge. They're six ounce cookies. I do probably more of that than anything else," said Brown.

You can also get chocolate, lemonade or gelato.

Brown is originally from Cedar Falls and said she always saw herself in the food business.

"A long time ago I had this dream of doing something in the food business, and I'm not a restaurant worker, but I had a nanny who taught me how to bake and had me in the kitchen all the time," said Natalie Brown.

Within about two months time, the building space became available, she signed a lease and the business opened.

"We just want to make people happy. That's my food mantra, and when somebody says this is the best thing I've ever eaten that's really cool for me," said Brown.

She said she's grateful for all the customers so far, and it's great to be part of the business community in downtown Cedar Falls.

"People come in and say they haven't had a bakery in 20 years. It's an exciting venture. I grew up in the Cedar Valley, and I want to stay planted here," said Brown.

Scratch Bakery and Cafe is located on West Second Street in Cedar Falls. It's open Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and until 7 p.m. on Thursday.
