Commission presents recommendations for Sinclair smokestack

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids Historic Preservation Commission hopes to safe at least part of the Sinclair smokestack.

Earlier this week the city council voted to tear down the 180-foot smokestack. The cost to stabilize it and restore it, including delaying the current demolition of the meat packing plant, is 2.7 million dollars.

The preservation commission says if it all can't be saved, maybe just the base can be. The 41-foot-tall base is said to be structurally sound.

The commission has three recommendations -- first preserve the base in the current location. If that's not possible, move it to a new site. And if the base can't be saved, preserve the bricks to use in a walkway or other memorial.
