Grants awarded to help war on drugs

DES MOINES (KWWL)–--Governor Chet Culver announced Thursday that the Office of Drug Control Policy has awarded more than $5 million in federal Byrne Justice Assistance Grants and Residential Substance Abuse Treatment program funds to 37 criminal justice projects statewide. The justice assistance grant funding was appropriated as part of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

"Public safety is essential, and these grants will assist 22 communities and 10 state agencies in their efforts to protect Iowa citizens from drugs and crime.  From rescuing small children from toxic meth labs to preventing teenagers from using marijuana and prescription drugs to rehabilitating cocaine addicts in drug treatment courts, these federal grants will help save lives," Governor Culver said.

Nearly all of the grant money supports personnel, and the largest share of funding goes to local law enforcement officers in 20 multi-jurisdictional drug task forces. Grants also support offender treatment and supervision programs and substance abuse prevention initiatives.
