Dubuque store to close Saturday, re-open in September

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- One staple of organic and local foods is closing Saturday, but not forever.

Breitbach's Farmers' Market Food Store will re-open in early September with a deli and under new management, current owner Mike Breitbach said.

Breitbach - not the same Mike Breitbach of Balltown's Breitbach's Restaurant - said his daughter will be taking the helm.

"This will be the end of 29 years for me. My daughter's 29. It's a sign for her to take over," Breitbach said.

The store will see renovations, such as restoring the floor to its original wood, which has since been covered with tiles.

Breitbach also said he plans to, "go back to the original tin ceiling, which is in excellent condition."

With all the food left in the store, Breitbach is offering a deal.

"Everything I can't store for the new opening or take home for my own consumption, we're just going to reduce the price on Saturday and move it on out," Breitbach said.

He said he also has a big plan for Dubuque's food future.

"We're just going to continue to expand the business of trying to get people involved in local, organic food," Breitbach said.

His ultimate hope, Breitbach said, is to open a local- and organic-food co-op in Dubuque, but said that might come in several years, after his daughter has established the renovated store.

Even though the store is closing, Breitbach said he will continue to have his stand Saturday mornings at the Dubuque farmers' market.
