Man charged in shooting found to be mentally challenged

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The man accused of shooting a Dubuque police officer in December has been diagnosed as mentally challenged.

A psychologist testified Eddie Chest has a below average IQ yesterday.

Chest and his son, Eddie Adams, are charged with first-degree robbery and attempted murder.

Prosecutors say the men exchanged gunfire with a Dubuque police officer at Knicker's Saloon.

The psychologist says Chest did not understand his confession would be held against him in court.

Chest's attorney says the confession should be suppressed.

The judge has not yet made her decision on the confession or if the trial should be moved.
