Black Hawks use tryout camp to shore up defense

WATERLOO (KWWL) – P.K. O'Handley and the Waterloo Black Hawks staff will have the next couple days to pare the more than 100 hopefuls down to the Black Hawks opening day roster.

One of the biggest concerns is shoring up a less than stellar defense.  Last season the Black Hawks tallied the third worst goals against average in the USHL, and at points in the season had 5 different goalkeepers in net, none of whom cracked the top 10 in the league.

O'Handley says that has to be addressed by the end of this week's tryout camp.

"I think the defense position will be interesting.  We return a lot, but we've got some great kids in camp," says O'Handley, "Goaltending has been an issue the last couple years, and we need to find a very solid one-two punch."

Waterloo got swept in the first round of the playoffs last season.  They're quest for a Clark Cup in the upcoming season begins in September.
