New hominid moves back date of walking upright

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new partial skeleton of an early hominid has been found in a mud flat in Ethiopia.

Dated about 3.6 million years ago, the find is about 400,000 years older than the famous Lucy, which was among the earliest upright walking hominids.

Researchers say the bones indicate this ancestor also walked upright, but was considerably larger than Lucy, who stood about 3.5 feet tall.

A researcher at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History says "this individual was fully bipedal and had the ability to walk almost like modern humans."

The find was made by an international team led by experts from the Cleveland museum.

Their report appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
