Settlement reached in Dubuque fatal crash lawsuit

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- A lawsuit filed against the Dubuque Community School District and the City of Dubuque by the family of a student who died in a traffic accident has been settled.

Lauren Schmidt and a 15-year-old classmate were hit near Dubuque Hempstead High School in September 2007 by a vehicle driven by 16-year-old Codi Rega.

Police say Schmidt passed in front of a school bus that had partially pulled on to Pennsylvania Avenue.

She later died at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Schmidt's parents, Gregory and Beth Ann filed a wrongful death suit against the school district, the bus driver, the city and an insurance company.

In April, the school district agreed to pay a settlement of $115,000 and the city agreed to pay $55,000.

Others details of the settlement remain confidential.
