Soldier's funeral set for Thursday

CRESCO (KWWL) -- Funeral services for Spc. Christopher Opat, 29, will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2010 in Cresco.

Services will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church at 223 2nd Avenue E. starting at 10:00 a.m.

Burial will follow in the Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in rural Elma.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Heritage Event Center at 232 3rd Avenue W. and on Thursday, one hour prior to Services at Notre Dame Catholic Church.  

Opat died from non-combat related injuries in Baqubah, Iraq on Tuesday. He was assigned to 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.

Opat, who enlisted on August 7, 2003, received two Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon.

Opat graduated from Crestwood High School in 2000.

He deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, with the latest starting in August of 2009.

Military officials are investigating the incident that took his life.

Opat's remains are scheduled to arrive in Rochester, Minnesota on Tuesday morning.
