CUNA awards scholarships to Bremer Co. students

WAVERLY (KWWL)--– Six graduates of Bremer County high schools have received $1,000 scholarships through CUNA Mutual Group's Growing in the Right Direction scholarship program, which recognizes students who stand out in the classroom and their communities.

This is the third year for the scholarship program.  The goal of the $1,000 scholarships is to help students succeed in life by rewarding their performance in the classroom and commitment to their communities.

"The scholarships will reward Bremer County high school seniors for their work in the classroom and their communities, and help them transition from high school to college," said Reid Koenig, vice president, CUNA Mutual Group.

Qualifying students must have contributed to their school or community through volunteerism, show academic promise and plan to attend a 2- or 4- year degree-granting school of higher learning in the state of Iowa.

Recipients of this year's scholarships are:  Alexander Frerking of Waverly-Shell Rock H.S., Casandra Martin of Nashua-Plainfield H.S., Brianna Niebuhr of Wapsie Valley H.S., Jenna Jessen of Denver H.S., Ryan Mattingly of Janesville H.S., and Chloe Haley of Tripoli H.S.
