Cigarette law set to take effect

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -- A new law goes into effect Tuesday banning cigarette companies from using certain description labels on their products.

The new law says cigarette makers can not use terms like "light, "low tar" or "mild" when marketing their product.

The law says those labels imply "light" cigarettes are "healthier" or "lower risk" than regular cigarettes.

Research says that while smoke from so called light cigarettes may feel lighter to the smoker, they are no less harmful than regular cigarettes.

Congress says the law was passed to protect public health and prevent consumers from being misled to believe that these products are healthier.
