Swim advisories issued for local beaches

STRAWBERRY POINT (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has issued swimming advisories at several state parks.  Recent samples taken at the beaches exceed normal bacterial standards.

Advisories went into effect Friday for seven Iowa state parks. They are Backbone, Beed's Lake, Black Hawk, Lake Keomah, Nine Eagles, Rock Creek and Union Grove.  Jason McCurdy is the beach monitoring program coordinator for the department. He says recent heavy rains could be to blame for the high bacterial readings.

Still, beach goers we talked with weren't too worried.

"No, not really.  I was down here last year when they said the same thing and everybody's fine," said Charles King.

Swimmers should take extra precautions not to swallow the water.  Those with weakened immune systems or open wounds should avoid the water completely.
