Iowa museum alters Gulf exhibit for oil spill

Posted:

DUBUQUE (AP) -- The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has led one Iowa museum to make a statement.

The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium will opening a new $40 million expansion on June 26, but with an altered Gulf of Mexico exhibit featuring an empty fish tank.

Officials at the Dubuque facility say the spill is one of the worst environmental disasters of its kind and they hope the empty exhibit will cause people to think, especially about the effects on wildlife.

In a statement, museum officials say they grappled with the appropriate course of action that would recognize the crisis.

They say the goal is to draw a connection between the Mississippi River and the ocean.

In addition to the empty fish tank, the exhibit will include information on how to get involved.
