Waves, smiles: Blagojevich still tries to connect

CHICAGO (AP) -- When it comes to his inner-campaign switch, Rod Blagojevich apparently knows only one mode: 'On.'

Since his corruption trial began, the impeached Illinois governor has drawn on his skill as a politician to work the federal courthouse. The big-haired Blagojevich cheerfully agrees to pose for cell-phone snapshots. At the slightest encouragement from bystanders, he moves in for chitchat.

Judge James Zagel has said Blagojevich should tone down his comments to reporters. But it may be difficult for him to contain himself. And the biggest test of his ability to charm and woo may still await him: His attorneys say he intends to take the stand.

Blagojevich has pleaded not guilty to charges including that he tried to sell President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat and was part a racketeering scheme.
