Dubuque museum and aquarium welcomes new attraction

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- On June 26, the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque will welcome a new attraction,  The Diamond Jo River Center. It's located just across the parking lot from the museum. Thursday, we got a sneak peak  inside the center and learned what makes the new center unique.

On Thursday, crews were hard at work, putting the finishing touches on just about everything at the new Diamond Jo river Center.

"I think people are going to be surprised by the impact. I think you start to see it when you look at the scope and size of the exhibits," Executive Director, Jerry Enzler said.

The 50,000 square foot museum and aquarium expansion will house three galleries including four salt water aquariums. A river research center, cafe and gift shop are also part of the new project.

"[Because] when you drive by you don't necessarily see how tremendous it is inside. But we think this will set Dubuque's reputation on fire again," Enzler said.

Perhaps one of the most exciting attractions, the new 3D/4D theater. On Thursday, crews were installing the new seats, which will be complete for opening day. The new theater will offer something people have never seen, heard, felt or even smelled before.

"The screen is indeed 40 feet wide, there's two projectors. Also has 4D special effects so as the shark swims by an tries to attack, your seat will actually vibrate," Enzler said.

And all of this is part of the expansion project which originally put Dubuque on the map in 2003 after the museum and aquarium opened its doors. In the meantime, crews are working hard for opening day, June 26th.

The first two films to show in the new 3D/4D theater: The World of Sharks and Turtle Vision. Cost of admission to the museum is $15 for adults and $10 for kids. The admission price includes all the attractions. It does cost extra to watch the films.
