CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Cedar Rapids Police say they are investigating two separate business robberies that happened late Wednesday night.  They also say they are trying to determine if they were committed by the same people.

The first happened at 10:42 p.m. at Mama Mia's Pizza and Pasta at 408 Edgewood Rd NW.  Officers say two employees and a customer were in the store when two black men came in demanding money.

They say one was carrying a shotgun or a rifle.

The men took money from one register and demanded they open a safe. When they found that nothing had been put in the safe, police say the man with the gun fired at one of the employees.

Police say employees believed the gun to be a BB or pellet gun and say the shot grazed the employee's head.  The man then struck the same employee in the head with the butt of the gun, but he did not need medical treatment.

Police say the men also took the customers purse and items from one employee.

The suspects are described as follows:

Suspect 1- short, very dark complexion, medium build, early to mid 20's, wearing a long white t-shirt, black pants and yellow bandanna covering his entire face, with holes cut out for the eyes, wearing yellow gloves.

Suspect 2 – lighter complexion black male, about 6'2", early to mid 20's, wearing a white t-shirt, dark pants and a green bandanna over his entire face with the holes cut out for the eyes, wearing yellow gloves. This subject displayed the rifle.

The second robbery took place at Howard Johnson's, 616 33 Ave SW, at around 11:51 p.m.

Police say an employee was behind the counter when two black men entered the store and demanded money.

They say one of the men was carrying a long gun.

They took an undisclosed amount of money and left through the front door.

These suspects are described as follows:

Suspect 1 – black male, early to mid 20's, 5'6", slender build, white handkerchief, black shirt and pants, yellow gloves.

Suspect 2 – black male, 6'0", slender build, early to mid 20's, green bandanna, hat or scarf over his hair, yellow gloves, carrying a long gun.

Again, the Cedar Rapids Police Department is investigating both robberies and are unsure if these robberies were done by the same men.

If you have information regarding these robberies, call Linn County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-CR-CRIME. If the information you give, leads to an arrest, you may be eligible for a reward. All calls are anonymous.
