Leave black bear alone, officials say

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says people should avoid contact with the black bear cub moving along north eastern Iowa and making its way near Bremer and Black Hawk County.

Iowa conservation officer Mike Bonser says they are concerned that people are taking pictures of the bear. He says it can be like "a zoo of humans causing the bear distress." However Bonser says in general, people have stayed away from the bear.

Conservation officials say the cub looks like it's following water like the Cedar River.

Bonser says black bears from Minnesota and Wisconsin are moving south. The month of June is breeding season and male cubs can be forced out of areas where more mature male bears rule.
