Des Moines man kills self while speaking to police

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Police in Des Moines say a 40-year-old man pulled out a gun while talking to a police officer and shot himself to death.

Police say Randy Scott was in a truck while talking to the officer, who was called on a report of a suspicious vehicle. Police officer Cordell Miller says in a report that he retreated when Scott pulled out the weapon. Miller says he was drawing his own gun when Scott shot himself in the head. Scott was pronounced dead at the scene.

Miller wrote in the report that he could see through the truck's rear window as Scott put the gun to the right side of his head and fired. Miller said he called for help and then approached the truck, finding Scott unresponsive and the gun in Scott's hand in his lap.
