Soldier with local ties dies in Iraq

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, WASHINGTON (KWWL) -- A soldier from Spencer, who graduated from Crestwood High School in 2000, died Tuesday in Iraq.

Spc. Christopher W. Opat, 29, died from non-combat related injuries in Baqubah, Iraq.  Opat was assigned to 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.

Opat enlisted, who enlisted on August 7, 2003, received two Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon. 

Opat graduated from Crestwood High School in 2000. 

He deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, with the latest starting in August of 2009.

Military officials are investigating the incident that took his life.
